2024 NFL Training Camp Risers and Fallers

RISERS 📈

Bills receivers not named Chase Claypool. It sure was fun while it lasted, but I fear Chase Claypool's time as an NFL employee is nearing an end. His rookie season was promising, but it's been all downhill from there. In a tragic and unforeseen turn of events, he's been placed on season-ending IR.

The savory, steamy WR stew recipe is ready for Josh Allen to slurp right up. It contains equal parts Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, and rookie Keon Coleman to go along with a dash of James Cook and Dalton Kincaid (PLUS a sprinkle of Dawson Knox for a little extra spice 🌶).

Adonai Mitchell (Colts) - Josh Downs has a high ankle sprain he's working through, which is likely to take a few more weeks. The timeline for that injury is 4-6 weeks and AD Mitchell is suddenly thrust into a starting role as the new slot receiver.

Alec Pierce hasn't quite seized the opportunity to claim a significant share of the targets behind Michael Pittman Jr. so this opens the door for Mitchell to get some early, assertive reps.

Even though he technically caught this pass with his crotch, it's a nice, sharp out route and he's a physical freak with all the tools. Consider the door is open.

David Montgomery (Lions) - The Jahmyr Gibbs injury just further cements his value at the current ADP, as if it wasn't good before. He was potent last year in a tandem backfield, so I expect he'll be just as involved as the Lions ease Gibbs back (they say he'll be ready for Week 1🤷)

Reminder:

And this was done as "RB1.5"...

Ben Sinnott (Commanders) - Below you can observe the type of downfield YAC we like to see. Zach Ertz is 100 years old and methinks his targetshare will be modest. I project Sinnott to land somewhere in the "2023 Sam LaPorta/Dalton Kincaid" range this year as a rookie alongside Jayden Daniels.

FALLERS ðŸ“‰

Quentin Johnston (Chargers) - *extremely Mike Oldfield voice* “Can we get much low-er?”

To say his rookie season was a disappointment would be remarkably kind. It was an unmitigated disaster, and there are still very real concerns as to whether or not he can actually catch a football.

The Chargers had (have?) big plans for QJ, but those might've been scrapped by now and Ladd McConkey was brought in as an insurance policy. He's spent a good chunk of camp battling drops again, and if he can't rectify those buttery fingers of his, then we're getting dangerously close to "epic bust" territory (not the cool kind).

Justin Jefferson (Vikings) - Sam Darnold is the unchallenged starter now that JJ McCarthy is out for the year after a full meniscus repair. I hate to be ugly, but he's not a viable starter in the league. He hasn't thrown double digit passing TDs since 2019 and the last time he sniffed 400 passing attempts he threw for just 2,500 yards, had 9 TDs and 13 INTs. One also has to factor in the injury to Jordan Addison, who was carted off the field at practice yesterday.

Let me be clear: Justin Jefferson is still Justin Jefferson, but his stock has taken several hits this preseason and you can expect copious double teams in his near future. The situation in Minneapolis has reached:

Bryce Young (Panthers) - Between showing up on day one of camp looking like an 8th grader heading to first period...

...and more training camp interceptions...

... it ain't great.

Admittedly, he wasn't good last year but he was thrown into a no-win situation. His surroundings have improved a little this year, but it also hasn't been a particularly encouraging camp.
