Tua Tagovailoa Is In Concussion Protocol Again
It’s another Tuesday following NFL Football and Tua Tagovailoa is once again in concussion protocol. If it all feels like deja vu it’s because he already missed two games this season because of head injuries. I’ve come to a very simple conclusion about Tua that makes him more concussion-prone: he’s bad at falling down.
Not to make light of head injuries, but every time he goes down it reminds me of Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crashers playing flag football:
Tua is borderline clumsy when he takes hits. He isn’t the biggest quarterback out there at 6’1” 220ish, but he takes hits and falls harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. It’s an intangible for a quarterback to be able to take hits and get back up. No need to be a hero, just go down and protect your body/brain - he’s definitely been told this a million times. It’s easier said than done and there’s no amount of coaching that can be done to change a quarterback’s instincts. You see a lot of quarterbacks absorb contact, but Tua seems to take the brunt of every collision.
Most recently against the Packers on Christmas Day, he got wrapped up from behind and flopped to the ground like a warm, wet spaghetti noodle.
It wasn’t even a violent hit, but Tua being a bad faller came into play and his body snapped down with his head breaking his fall. He wasn't able to/didn’t brace for impact at all and his head bounced off the turf, again. It didn’t look that bad at the time and he did stay in the game, but apparently after the game the symptoms came back and he threw three horrible interceptions following that, so it probably was another concussion. Those interceptions may have cost them the game, and now he’s set to miss even more time as the Dolphins hinge their AFC Wild Card hopes on Teddy Bridgewater.if this play at 2:40 was Tua's concussion, here are his stats:

pre-concussion: 9/12, 229 yds, 19.1 YPA, 1 TD, 0 INT

There are lots of folks begging Tua to sit out the remainder of the season and fully heal up. His concussion in Cincinnati was legitimately scary and the Dolphins might need to intervene a little more to preserve their franchise QB.
The Dolphins need a win in the next two weeks to be cleared for the postseason, plain and simple. There are some other factors involved if they don’t win out, but they play the Patriots and the Jets so that’s gotta be where their focus is. Prayers for all the Dolphins diehards out there, these are trying times.
