The Bodycam Footage Of Odell Beckham Jr. Getting Booted From A Plane Is Out And Who's Really To Blame Here?

Quick rewind in case anyone missed it, but there was a story in late November about Odell Beckham being "unresponsive" on a plane, causing the flight to be delayed. Not only did they remove Odell Beckham Jr. from the flight, they made everyone else unload as well. It was a story at the time only because it's OBJ and it was made out to sound like the flight attendants thought he was in really bad shape, in and out of consciousness. The bodycam footage is interesting, to say the least.

There's a LOT to take in here. The video starts after flight attendants tried to wake him up and make him buckle his seatbelt at which point they've already called in fire rescue. Those guys show up and check on him, and he's alert enough to answer basic questions. This was all a big fat overreaction and became overblown because OBJ is a lightning rod. A few things that stood out to me:
  • OBJ is at least mostly awake and responsive. It wasn't like he was totally dead to the world. He knew where he was and where he was flying to. The fire rescue guys seem satisfied once he was up and answering questions and it's immediately a non-issue to them. They even say he acts like he's tired, "he looks good to me though". They appear borderline annoyed to even be there and don't seem inclined to remove him.
  • There was some talk of him being at a club before the flight and that he's "taken stuff". Again, fire rescue doesn't seem concerned about this. If it's a crime to carry a buzz into the air and sleep it off, then put me in shackles. If they were truly worried about him getting into a bad spot during the five hour flight then I can appreciate their concern, but also lay off.
  • Did he or did he not take his pants off at some point? I'm not clear what the airline bylaws say on this and it feels at least a little wacky to pop your trousers off on a commercial flight. The male flight attendant sounded especially upset and said he was in his underwear. This part is just funny, I don't care who you are. They're debating whether or not Odell Beckham Jr. is pantsless. Counterpoint: People take their shoes off on flights which is WAY worse.
  • The flight attendants honestly just seem triggered that he wouldn't follow their directions. I understand the rules of a plane (I've flown several times) but taking it personal and kicking everyone off the plane is way extra just because he was sleeping through your useless pre-flight announcements that everyone's heard a million times.
    • If a plane is going down, like REALLY going down, do you really think it's gonna make a big difference if people paid attention to your pre-flight spiel? Have you ever even watched 'Lost'?
  • After it's decided he's gotta go, OBJ's just sitting as folks gather their overhead luggage and stew. I'm not sure what was said but you can hear Beckham quipping back and forth with people who might've been throwing nasty looks his way. The grade of shit talk from Odell is A++ and massively disrespectful. He targets a lad in red with angry papaw vibes and tells him to "enjoy the cheeseboard" (?????) then calls him ugly. There's no coming back from this one. It was a well executed burn, plain and simple. This portion of the video isn't the greatest look for OBJ but at this point, whatever. The flight attendants have cleared the plane regardless, so may as well get some parting shots in there. The guy in the red ceases to exist after their exchange as he was burnt to a crisp.
He probably should've just buckled his seatbelt to begin with. The defiance from a passenger clearly sent the flight crew into a frenzy and they decided to make a scene. When it's all said and done, no harm no foul but the flight crew may need to reevaluate how they handle groggy/difficult passengers. And if he actually did take his pants off, then OBJ may also be wise to refrain from that in the future.
