Bijan Robinson's career with the Falcons is off to a pretty slick start. The Falcons announced yesterday that he'd be wearing the iconic #7 next year, following in Michael Vick's footsteps. Yeah, I know Younghoe Koo also wore #7 but that doesn't really count because everybody knows kickers aren't real people. Anyways, this is a lovely usage of the new NFL jersey number eligibility and Bijan rocking a single digit, especially #7 for the Falcons, is eternally sexy. Think of this as the ocular patdown, and Bijan is cleared for passage.
The Falcons were, by today's standards, aggressive on draft day picking Bijan Robinson when they did. According to current draft guidelines and trends, you just don't draft a RB this high. Too risky and you can get Most draft "experts" are dipshits that don't know anything, so who cares? The Falcons assessed their situation and broke the mold - Arthur Smith and Co. knew what they wanted so they went out and got it.Is there any way Bijan Robinson isn't a top-5 back next year? Lots of comparisons to Christian McCaffrey and I don't think those would be floating around lightly. I can't stop thinking about the catches out of the backfield plus 250+ carries he's gonna see. Some people thought this was a wacky pick at 8 overall but the Falcons knew what they were doing. They're a run-heavy team - they ran the ball the most in the NFL in 2022 and averaged 4.9 yards per carry as a team splitting carries between Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patterson. They didn't try to overextend and draft someone just because Mel Kiper said to, they drafted to their strengths and ignored the "experts" that say not to use a high draft pick on a running back. The point is: Arthur Smith has run the ball well with lesser players and Bijan is a special talent set to feast in 2023.
This is a smart move by the Falcons to reinvigorate the classic Falcons "7" on their newest bell cow. It's a big responsibility but the confidence by Bijan to step in and fill the shoes that Michael Vick previously wore. Immediately establishing himself as the alpha dog and stealing Younghoe Koo's number is an immeasurable "plus" on his scouting report. Consider Bijan the early Rookie of the Year frontrunner.
